Jemma Varela awarded King’s Ambulance Service Medal for outstanding service at East of England Ambulance Service

A woman who began her ambulance service career more than 20 years ago has been awarded one of the highest honours in the profession.

Jemma Varela, head of clinical operations for Suffolk and North East Essex at the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST), has been awarded the prestigious King’s Ambulance Service Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours.

The medal recognises individuals who have shown exceptional devotion to duty, outstanding leadership and made a lasting impact on patient care.

“I am incredibly honoured to receive the medal,” she said.

“This recognition is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of the amazing teams I’ve had the privilege to work with throughout my career.

“I’m passionate about delivering the highest standards of patient care and supporting the wellbeing of our staff.

“I’m proud to be part of a service that makes such a meaningful difference every day.”

Jemma joined EEAST in 2003 and has held a number of roles in training, patient safety and operational management.

Her leadership and clinical expertise have been credited with helping to raise standards of care across the region.

She was also the first female critical care paramedic to serve with the East Anglian Air Ambulance – and continues to work with the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, alongside her volunteer work with Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS).

Jemma is committed to professional development and holds a master’s degree in Critical Care from Cardiff University while she is currently studying for an Executive MBA at Arden University.

Neill Moloney, EEAST chief executive, said: “Jemma’s leadership and dedication exemplify the very best of our service.

“Her recognition with the King’s Ambulance Service Medal is richly deserved and we are incredibly proud to have her as part of our team.

“Jemma is a role model for living our Trust values and sets the gold standard for management at EEAST, always putting the welfare of her staff and the needs of our patients at the forefront.”
