X Factor’s Matt mobbed in Sudbury

X FACTOR winner Matt Cardle got more than he bargained for when he opted for a quick shopping trip into Sudbury last week.

The 27-year-old from Little Maplestead had only come into the town to buy a charger for his phone, but was quickly spotted by fans and mobbed for autographs and pictures on Market Hill on Thursday afternoon.

The former painter and decorator took it all in his stride – despite needing police help to get back to his car.

Shannen Leeder, 13, a student at Cornard Upper School, said: “I was with my friend Abby and we just saw a big crowd of people.

“It was pretty amazing seeing him and he said hello to me.”

Adulation for the talented singer, who hit Christmas No 1 with his first single, When We Collide, reached such a pitch that a police escort was needed to help him return to his car.

Pcso Linda Turkentine said: “He only came into town to do some shopping, but was recognised by a few girls and before you knew it, word got round and he was being mobbed.

“He seemed quite happy with all the support and said he was honoured to meet so many fans.”

Pcso Turkentine added that Matt, a former pupil at Stoke College in Stoke by Clare, took the whole experience in his stride, signing autographs and pictures for all the fans.

“I had a quick chat with him and he seemed like a nice lad,” she said.
