Rhys, 13, releases song for charity

A teenage singer has produced a song for charity after being inspired by the experiences of a friend with cancer.

Rhys Butterworth-Bowman, 13, is donating all the profits from his single New Beginning to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Lyrics in the song have been created through conversations Rhys, who attends Stoke-by-Nayland Middle School, has had with family friend Tom Bowdidge.

Tom, 19, was diagnosed with cancer in September and is currently undergoing treatment.

“In the verses, I quote what Tom was saying when I spoke to him about what he is feeling,” said Rhys, from The Green in Leavenheath.

“It was very hard to hear what he was saying and it was a weird experience, but the overall feeling was that he wants to get back to normality.”

Rhys, who was named overall winner of Bures Music Festival last year, wrote, produced and recorded the track in his bedroom.

“Tom did say he felt better for talking about what he is going through and hopefully the song will raise some money,” Rhys said.

The song was released yesterday and is available on iTunes and music website Bandcamp.

Rhys’ mother Lisa said she was proud of what he was doing.

“He always said he felt like doing something to help in some way and he is doing that,” she said. “This has been a massive project for him.”
