Winning promotion is the sole focus for Sudbury
Sudbury Rugby Club captain Justin Burton confirmed the club’s sole focus this season is to gain promotion from London League Three North East.
Ahead of a scheduled winter break, Sudbury ensured they would head into the new year as league leaders after maintaining their perfect start to the season with a hard fought 22-17 success at Stowmarket to record a 12th straight win.
Despite conceding his surprise at the club’s faultless form, Burton is adamant they can maintain their title charge after the break, even hinting at the possibility of keeping up their perfect record throughout the entire campaign.
“Prmotion is our only aim,” he said. “We are only halfway through the season but promotion should be the only aim for this club at this stage.
“It has been a wonderful start, what more can I say.
“None of us really saw a run like this coming at the beginning of the season, it would have been a bit arrogant of us to say we did.
“But after getting on a bit of a roll there is a real buzz around the club at the moment.
“No one wants to predict too far ahead of ourselves, but we are all confident we can keep this run going and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be looking to go on and win every game.
“What we need to do now is come back after the Christmas break and really push on and keep going as we have been.”
Reflecting on Sudbury’s impressive form so far this season, Burton believes the foundations laid in place by director of rugby Graham Richards over the past three seasons are finally paying dividends.
“The coach has been here for three years now and everything he has implemented over that time has become second nature to the squad,” he added.
“Everyone knows their individual roles and you can really see that difference during matches.
“Our desire and determination is to get out of this league as quickly as possible, and you can see that has been evident throughout the season.
“We will have a nice break over the festive period then come back and hopefully keep moving forward with further victories.”
