Weekend round-up: AFC Sudbury off to winning start

Three of David Batch’s summer signings were all on target as AFC Sudbury opened their season with a 3-1 win at Thurrock on Saturday.

The Yellows got off to a winning start in Batch’s first competitive game in charge courtesy of goals from Ben Thompson, Jamie Forshaw and Scott Mitchell.

AFC host Cambridgeshire side Soham Town Rangers in their first home game on Tuesday (7.45pm).

In the Thurlow Nunn League, Hadleigh United got off to a flying start in the Premier Division with a 4-0 home victory over Woodbridge Town.

New signing Duane Wright got two goals on his return to the club while James Blades and Scott Chaplin were also on target.

In the First Division, Mark Hoskin’s first competitive game in charge of Cornard United ended in a 5-0 home defeat to March Town United.

Halstead Town beat league newboys Dereham Town Reserves 3-1 at Rosemary Lane, while Long Melford lost 3-0 at home to Swaffham Town and AFC Sudbury Reserves’ first game in the league ended in a 3-1 defeat at Team Bury.

In the Sky Bet Championship Ipswich Town beat Millwall 3-0 at Portman Road to pick up their first points of the season, following defeat at Reading.

In the cricket, Sudbury remain bottom of the East Anglian Premier League after a one-wicket defeat at home to Cambridge Granta.
