Weekend cricket: Halstead move above Sudbury after Bury win

HALSTEAD enjoyed a great win over Bury St Edmunds at Star Stile, while Sudbury’s general draw at Clacton kept them in a healthy position in the EAPL, ahead of meeting rivals Halstead on Saturday.

The Essex club’s 40 run victory over fifth-placed Bury, which included a 67 from opener Freddie Blackwell in their 169 total from their 50.3 overs, moves them to seventh place in the table.

Halstead are on 149 points, the same as eighth-placed Sudbury, with the two sides meeting at the weekend. Both are now 48 points above the one-team relegation place, currently occupied by Norwich.

Halstead’s win was achieved with four wickets from overseas star Syed Rasel as well as two each from Thom Philp and Matthew Spatcher.

Meanwhile, Sudbury got three points for their draw at Clacton with a bonus total of 254-7 off their 66 opening overs - Jay Phillips returned with 58 while captain Darren Batch weighed in with 62.

With the ball, Jonny Gallagher took an impressive four wickets but the Talbots were unable to bowl their opponents out in time.
