Walking football comes to AFC Sudbury

Walking football has grown increasingly popular in Suffolk over recent years and it has now arrived at AFC Sudbury.

There are more than a dozen centres across the entire county, many of which offer weekly sessions.

The sessions at AFC Sudbury are held on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm and last an hour.

Two of the people that have taken advantage of that are AFC Sudbury director Richard Instance and his father Dick, who both live in Long Melford.

“I mentioned it to him and he was a bit non-committal to begin with, but he turned up the first week to have a look,” said 60-year-old Richard.

“I didn’t say anything to him because I didn’t want to put him under any pressure, but he borrowed a pair of boots and had a go.

“As luck would have it Father’s Day was the following week, so I bought him a pair of boots and he has been to every session since.”

With a combined age of 144, the father and son duo are believed to be the oldest related family members playing walking football in Suffolk, and possibly beyond.
