Title hangs in the balance after final game

Three wins from four in simultaneous home and away games against Risbygate have left Sudbury Bowls Club hanging on at the top of the Men’s West Suffolk County League, waiting to see if it was enough to be crowned champions.

A big score in the last game in the league, consisting of clubs from Lakenheath, Haverhill, Risbygate and Sudbury, between Lakenheath and Haverhill, could take the title away from current top team Sudbury.

At the home fixture at Quay Lane, club captain Aaron Phillips led Brian Stack, Len Baker and Keith Bloomfield and played solidly throughout on rink two, winning 24-19. On rink three, Lea Blackham captained Terry Parsons, Tony Johnson and John Williamott.

Parsons was playing his first county league game and was well up to the challenge playing at lead (number one).

He equipped himself very well, playing creditable shots and backed up by the experienced and consistent team behind him, they won 33-11.

At the away fixture, Graham Rowland captained Alan Trimlett, Mark Wickenden and Graham Gooderham, but came up against an in-form team and lost 31-19.

The other away team was led by John Ovel with Colin Tuxworth, Dave Parker and Graham Smith who were able to win with a good 19-9.
