A thrilling one-run victory was just reward for a determined Melford performance on a damp and challenging pitch.
Exning’s opening bowlers made the batsmen work for every run after inserting Melford, who were 26-2 after 10 overs.
Several Melford batsmen got starts, but could not convert them into big scores.
Lee Phillips (29), Brett Wright (36) and Chris Cleverley (27) contributed to a total of 152.
James French and Gareth Boon found movement with the ball, which combined with good fielding, had Exning at 51-4.
With Matthew Catley (50) at the crease it looked like Exning were in pole position, but Stuart Whitehart dismissed him, leaving Exning on 128-6.
Two wickets fell for just four runs, meaning Exning needed 21 runs with two wickets in hand.
French bowled King to make it 151-9, but Whitehart held is nerve to claim a caught and bowled and secure Melford the win.
