“The job’s done from the point of view of winning the league,” said Director of Rugby Graham Richards. “The icing on the cake would be to remain unbeaten, but you are only remembered for winning the league.

“Next season will be tough. But we still have two games left and a cup final, so let’s enjoy the moment. It will be difficult over the next couple of weeks to keep them up for it, but the challenge for them now is to go unbeaten.”

Sudbury, with 19 wins and one draw, face Lowestoft and Yarmouth away on Saturday, and promotion-chasing West Norfolk visit Whittome Field for the final league game of the season on April 11. They then defend the Suffolk Cup at Stowmarket on April 18.

“We are still a work in progress. We’ve got more work to do in the development of players, but let’s enjoy today,” said Richards. “It’s a testimony to the effort and work of the boys, and the coaches.

“When I came here it’s what was in my sights, to play good rugby and to make the club inclusive.

“Today we scored some good tries and entertained again. Everybody wants to see the likes of Frazer Beckett, Shaun Smith, Jonny Taylor, Austin Beckett, and Matt Johnston running for the line.

“We are starting to produce the youngsters, and they are almost all Sudbury boys. If a youngster comes in, he comes in because he’s good enough.”

Sudbury, he felt, were “a bit dishevelled at the start. But after they had thrown a few things at us early on, we scored. Then we had a purple five minutes, and it was over.”

Although he was unhappy that Sudbury’s concentration briefly went in the second half, allowing Beccles to score, he had some sympathy for the visitors, who came with just 16 players.

“They’ve been going through a tough time. I know what it’s like. Two years ago we went to Wisbech with just 15 players.”
