Debenham LC 1

Long Melford 5

Long Melford extended their lead at the top of the table with a masterful performance to brush aside title rivals Debenham LC.

It was the Hornets who got themselves ahead as Robbie Kemp’s cross from the right-hand side found Ben Golding to guide his header home.

However, the hosts were not ahead for long as, following a period of prolonged pressure, Dan Swain seized on a defensive mix-up between two Debenham players from Nathan Rowe’s pull back to fire home an equaliser from close range.

The momentum continued with the visitors, who quickly doubled their tally when a swift move down the left-hand side saw the ball eventually reach Jamie Clark at the far post to score.

Debenham attempted to get a foothold back in the game, but they found themselves further behind just before the break as Jamie Griffiths curled home a brilliant free-kick after Wesley Doyle was bundled over by Gavin Flurrie.

With goal scorer Griffiths injured before the interval, Melford introduced Dan Statham into proceedings at the start of the second half.

The pressure continued after the interval and Melford quickly added to their advantage as Jack Durey reacted quickest to Swain’s initial saved shot to prod home a fourth.

And what proved a forgetful afternoon for the home side substitute Statham wrapped up proceedings in the 70th minute with an unstoppable fifth goal with a left-footed drive to seal the win.
