Survival is the target for Sudbury
Sudbury Rugby Club chairman Bob Waller insists survival is the main target for their first season back in London League Division Two North East.
The Whittome Field-based outfit won the Division Three North East title last season to seal a return to level seven of the rugby union pyramid.
And ahead of their season opener at Rochford Hundred on Saturday (3pm), the Sudbury chairman wants the club to consolidate in their first Division Two North East campaign since being relegated back in 2011.
“All we want to do is stay up,” Waller said.
“It’s a big step up for the youngsters in our squad, so we just want to consolidate in the higher league this season.
“It’s great to be back in this league and renew our rivalries with lots of old enemies like Ipswich, Norwich, Diss and Holt.
“Promotion last season was very important, because if we’d had a disaster and got relegated from that league, it would have been very hard to get back into the National League.
“We’re in a good place now where we’re playing good enough rugby for players to join us and also hold onto the players we’ve already got.”
