More than 500 swims took place when Sudbury Storms held their annual Valentines Masters and Seniors Meet at the weekend.

The event, which took place at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, in Sudbury, on Sunday, also incorporated the Suffolk Masters Championships.

With more than 35 clubs from around the region attending, many personal bests were achieved and a number of East Region records were broken during the event.

One of the most memorable swimmers was Donald MacFarlane, a member of West Norfolk Swimming Club, who will soon be celebrating his 88th birthday.

He took part in multiple events on the day, which many spectating could not have imagined.

Sudbury’s own British record holder, Jean Appleby, was in action as well in four events on the day.

The event also marked the first swim competition which included TRISudbury, the East Region Club of the Year for 2016, since they were registered as an ASA affiliated club.

Natalie McLaren claimed a County gold medal and a Meet silver medal with her time of 32:16 seconds in the 50m freestyle, while her time of 42:07 in the 50m breaststroke earned her County silver and Meet bronze medals.

Her TRISudbury club mates Sarah Boxall and Simon Budd also took home medals, with Boxall winning County and Meet gold medals in the 100m freestyle (one minute and 25:91 seconds).

Budd secured both County and Meet bronze medals in the 100m freestyle (1:07:21) and 50m fly (32:80).

Newmarket & District Swimming Club finished top of the club placings with 264 points, with Colchester and Stowmarket (both 188 points) finishing in joint second.

Storms have Development, Club, County, Regional and Masters squads training at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre from Tuesday through to Friday and also on Sunday.
