Sudbury Ladies lose out in physical hockey contest
EAST WOMEN’S LEAGUE
DIVISION ONE SOUTH
Broxbourne Ladies 4
Sudbury Ladies 1
Sudbury Ladies travelled to Hertfordshire to face their Broxbourne counterparts, in what turned out to be an extremely physical game.
The hosts started strongly, piling on the pressure to Sudbury’s defence, taking some early shots to which keeper Ele Brebner responded well.
After what can only be described as questionable decisions from the umpires, Broxbourne used this to their advantage, scoring a breakaway goal.
In the following minutes, Brebner was injured during play and Broxbourne capitalised on this to score another, as they went into the break 2-0 up.
Despite battling play from injured player of the match Brebner, Broxbourne managed to sneak another goal.
This fired Sudbury up and encouraged some more attacking play, with a couple of close opportunities from short corners.
Debutants Hayley Spooner and Josie Partridge stepped up to the occasion in fine form, as Liv Greaves and Kirsty Batch combined to find Chloe Hunnable to pull one back for the visitors.
But Broxbourne sealed the points with a penalty flick to end any hopes of a comeback.
n Sudbury Under-12 Girls won one, drew two and lost one of their four games during the first round of the Suffolk Youth League.
