Storms sneak into fourth spot at finals

Sudbury Storms beat their rivals Halstead by a single point to finish fourth at the Winter B League Finals night at Newmarket.

Competing against teams from Newmarket, Leiston, Felixstowe and Halstead the evening ended with Leiston out on top and Storms just four points behind Felixstowe in third place.

The Open Boys cleaned up the individual events, winning all five in grand style and the swimmers recorded 17 personal best (pb) times.

The evening started well with the open I00m individual medley (IM) with a pb from Lydia Bingham in one minute 19.14 seconds and a win for Chris Greenhalgh, also a pb in 1min 02.80secs.

Katie Chambers in the under-11 50m backstroke followed with a pb in 41.37secs, while Caitlin Evans’ 46.52secs in the 12 and 13-year-olds 50m breaststroke was also a pb.

Nick Robertson followed up with a second win for the team in the open 50m butterfly, while nine-year-old Jessica Deacon smashed her 50m freestyle pb in the under-11 event to finish in 38.27secs.

Harry Gregory recorded a pb of 41.09secs in the boys event and the 12 and 13-year-olds 50m butterfly saw Charlie Harman gain a pb in 38.79secs.

The race of the night though came in the girls 14 and 15-year-olds 50m backstroke, where two jokers were played, one for Storms and one for Felixstowe.

Amid much shouting and cheering, Olivia Sherred dug deep and pulled ahead in the final metres for a fantastic win with double points and a smashing pb of 32.90secs.

Orion Nichol jumped in for the boys event and took a second off his time for an impressive pb of 33.07secs.

The boys’ joker was played on the open 50m breaststroke and Chris Greenhalgh did not disappoint with his second convincing win for the team.

In the first block of relays, Caitlin Evans led off the junior girls 4x50 freestyle relay with a pb of 34.16secs.

In the under-11 50m breaststroke Zellah Chambers finished in a pb of 50.77secs and Katie Chambers in the butterfly with her second pb of the night finished in a very good time of 41.84secs.

The Open 50 backstroke saw Laurence Chalk register the team’s fourth win of the night.

In the 12 and 13-year-olds 50 backstroke there was a second pb for Charlie Harman in 38.13secs and a third pb for Caitlin Evans in 38.81secs.

Brother Harry Harman followed in the 14 and 15-year-olds 50m breaststroke with a personal best of 36.75secs.

The final individual event gave Storms their fifth win with Nick Robertson in the open 50m freestyle, while there were six second places recorded on the night.
