Stoke beat Haverhill to seal second Curry Cup win of the season
Looking for their second league win in the Curry Cup, Stoke by Nayland faced Haverhill Golf Club at home. The players went into the morning foursomes’ session in very windy, but sunny, conditions.
The home advantage suited Stoke as they took a lunch time lead of five matches to one. The stand out partnership of the morning was Rob Benson and Ian Smith, who compiled an impressive 5&4 win.
The afternoon singles were closer, but wins for Steve Woods, Richard Cross, Del Pritchard, Ian Benson, Karl Cansdale and Rob Benson ensured the overall match win for Stoke-by-Nayland.
Stoke-by-Nayland team: S Woods, M Eaves, R Cross, D Prichard, P Champ, D Holland, I Benson, K Cansdale, I Smith, R Benson, P Nuttall and S Hewett.
It proved to be a successful week for Stoke-by-Nayland, with wins in the Leslie Wood Plate against Theydon Bois, the Jubilee Cup at home to Colchester 5½-3½ and the Youth Shield at home to Burnham.
The Leslie Wood team are away to Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club in the quarter final.
Stoke have been drawn at home in round six of the Mail on Sunday Classic against Bentley Golf Club and will play on Saturday, teeing off at 1.36pm.
This is new ground for the players as it is the furthest the club has reached in this prestigious national competition.
