Signing off in style
Jon Coone expected to spend Saturday watching his Sudbury teammates clinch the title. Instead, he found himself in the thick of the action, and scoring one of Sudbury’s nine tries in his final appearance for the club.
Andy Currie was ruled out with an ankle injury, and at Thursday’s training session Coone was asked to step into the side by director of rugby Graham Richards.
“I said I was quite happy to play. I was delighted to be honest. And I scored a try,” said Coone.
“I said to the guys after the game ‘thanks for letting me play’.
“This was definitely my final appearance. My legs are too knackered. Next season I will concentrate on coaching here and helping out at my old club Felixstowe, which is where I started playing rugby.
“My first season there I won the league with them. And my last season here I’ve won the league with Sudbury. It’s a good way to finish.”
Coone, Sudbury’s playing committee chairman, coaches the club’s under-16s. “In my role as chairman we are looking at developing the Colts and juniors so that hopefully we can get five guys a year coming through for the first team.”
