No final-day drama for Halstead Town
THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Ely City 1 Halstead 0
Halstead Town saw their promotion dreams die with defeat at runners-up Ely City.
The Humbugs had made the long journey to Ely in hope rather than expectation as they knew that even if they beat the already promoted Cambridgeshire outfit a draw at home to lowly Team Bury would still ensure Yarmouth the final promotion spot.
Halstead’s cause was not helped by having a host of players missing due to injury and suspension including Spriggs, Pavett, Elkins, Brown and Cripps to name but a few.
However, the team performed admirably and only succumbed to a late Luke Mansfield header, when their fate was already known with Yarmouth leading at home.
The result left Mark Benterman’s team in fourth place.
Halstead: Spenser, Hutchings, Wilderspin, Simon-Parsons, Hurkett, Weaver (Regan), Murray (Juniper), Pleace, Warren, Jones (Cook), O’Hare.
Cornard United 1
Diss Town 3
Cornard United could not finish their season on a high at Diss Town, letting a lead slip to a side who played over an hour with 10 men.
But Chris Tracey’s side can reflect on a pleasing campaign that saw them reach the semi-final of the Suffolk Senior Cup and finish in their highest position for six years — 15th place.
