Newton Green toast further Hambro Success
Newton Green Golf Club achieved a new club first by retaining the Suffolk Hambro Cup with victory over Haverhill at Bury St Edmunds.
Until last year the club had failed to win the county’s premier handicap knock-out team event for 42 years — and now they have done it twice in successive seasons.
This year’s final, held at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club, saw Haverhill give Newton a much more difficult run for their money than Ipswich had done 12 months ago at Woodbridge.
Newton led the morning foursomes by a narrow five holes, and the margin looked precarious as Haverhill fought back strongly after lunch.
With the challengers knocking in a series of birdie putts mid-way through some of the closer matches, it began to look as if they had Newton on the run.
At one stage they were a hole ahead across all the day’s games.
But the Newton pairing of Simon Bearman and Mike Polley were putting a number of holes in the locker, eventually finishing 8up to Matt Fairlie and Gerry Scott, having already led Andy Fish and Paul Bartlett by five shots in the morning.
The follow-up afternoon success provided the buffer for overall team success.
Although down in some of the other afternoon encounters, Newton held their nerve, but it was not until the finishing shots of the final games that it became clear the trophy had been maintained, with a one-hole lead to add to the five of the morning.
Despite having lost a couple of the big hitters from last year’s line-up, Newton proved they had the strength in depth to pull off another significant run, which had also included victories against formidable opposition in the form of Ipswich, Rushmere and Hintlesham.
Newton’s non-playing captain Ian Woodhead received the trophy from county president, Phil Platten.
