New signing Okay unable to inspire AFC to victory

AFC Hornchurch 1

AFC Sudbury 0

The introduction of new signing Erkan Okay could not prevent AFC Sudbury from being knocked out of the Alan Turvey Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Okay, who is a former England C international and Ipswich Town trainee, joined the Yellows last week following his recently release from Cambridge City.

However, his debut was a losing one, with Hornchurch winning through thanks to a late goal.

The hosts began brightly with Abs Thompson causing problems on the wing and Ross Wall calling Sudbury goalkeeper Callum Robinson into action.

Goalscoring opportunities were at a premium for Sudbury throughout the first half, with the best chance falling to Luke Callander.

The powerful striker got his effort on target, but Hornchurch goalkeeper Sam Mott was up to the task.

The second half was more of an end-to-end encounter as Sudbury struck the post, while again Mott was on hand to thwart Callander.

Up the other end, Wall was off target from a good position and Leon McKenzie headed straight into Robinson’s hands.

But just when it appeared that the tie was heading into extra-time, Hornchurch struck decisively in the 86th minute.

Wall was the hero, beating a couple of Sudbury defenders before shooting beyond the reach of Robinson.

n AFC Sudbury Ladies completed the double over Writtle with a Sophie Jeffrey hat-trick coming in a 4-2 victory for Clive Goulding’s side.

After Jerrey gave them the lead five minutes in, Writtle’s pressure was rewarded with two quick goals.

Sudbury equalised when Stacey Teager closed down on the Writtle ‘keeper and her attempted clearance rebounded off Teager and into the net.

AFC went further ahead when a defence-splitting ball from Rebecca Thrower put Jeffery in, and she beat the ‘keeper from eight yards.

In the second half Sudbury scored a fourth from a corner from Jeffery. It capped a good win for the ladies, who face a tough trip to Acle on Sunday.

n AFC Gold Week 32 winners: £100 (332) C Robinson, AFC Sudbury; £10 (278) Mrs F Bird, Gaol Lane Sudbury, £10 (321) L Wales, AFC Sudbury.
