Morris and England crash out at quarter-final stage of European tournament
Ben Morris was unable to prevent England from being knocked out of the European Under-17 Championships in Baku on Sunday.
The Young Lions were up against eight-time champions Spain, who took the lead early on through Real Madrid starlet Francisco Garcia.
From that moment on, England were the more dominant side, but they could not force a crucial equalising goal.
Colne Engaine’s Morris started the encounter as a substitute, despite having broken his goalscoring duck at international level in the group stages.
He was introduced to the action midway through the second half and had a chance to level up the score in the 83rd minute.
However, his shot from close range was deflected wide by a retreating Spanish defender.
“It’s a tough one to take. Today we’ve experienced the fine margins of tournament football,” said England head coach Steve Cooper.
“We had some good chances, built from the back and I haven’t got any complaints with the players or their attitude.
“We were playing a good team, but the best side lost.”
