Thomas Gainsborough School’s (TGS) under-14 girls’ basketball team are the Suffolk champions, taking them to the regional rounds.
A strong team from TGS, representing the western area, were drawn against Sir John Leman High School in the county semi-finals at Inspire Suffolk.
TGS, having taken the tactics onboard and executing the skills very well, started strongly, and were 21-2 up at the end of the first quarter.
The team, playing some great basketball, pushed throughout the second, third and fourth quarters, and Sir John Leman did not know how to handle their power, pace and agility.
TGS comfortably reached the final with a 57-11 victory.
TGS were paired with Northgate High School in the final, two excellent teams competing for the bragging rights between friends who meet regularly at basketball in Ipswich.
Northgate were a completely different proposition, but TGS saw some great defensive work from Lucy Cowling and offensive displays from Ella Pearson, Anna Bruce and Cameron Taylor-Willis.
Four very tight quarters saw some excellent basketball from both teams. TGS created more opportunities, but were struggling to convert until the last quarter, when all shots ended up through the hoop.
A fine match saw a complete squad performance from TGS, who won 40-32. They will meet a Norfolk school in the regional round.
