Suds coach commits to relegation candidates

With Sudbury Rugby Club staring down the barrel of relegation to the Eastern Counties League, Graham Richards has pledged his future to rebuilding the club to its former glory.

The Sudbury coach, who took over in September, has admitted he was shocked by the size of the task he had taken on.

But with the club on the brink of a relegation that would have been unthinkable when vying for promotion to London One North in 2010/11, Richards has committed himself to a further three years.

Sudbury travel to fifth-placed Canatabrigian in London Three North East on Saturday (3pm) three points off safety with three tough looking games to go — but Richards believes they must look further ahead.

“Whatever the situation this year, because of my commitment to the club we will be sitting down with officials, the players and the youth section and looking to see what we can do in the short and long term to put Sudbury back up the leagues,” he said.

n Sudbury’s Austin Beckett made his debut for England Under-17s on Sunday in a 34-12 win over Georgia Under-18s at Broadstreet. It is hoped he will make a return for Suds on Saturday.
