Sudbury stand on brink of relegation

Saffron Walden Ladies 3

Sudbury Ladies 1

AFTER their 10th defeat in 21 matches at Saffron Walden Sudbury now play Carlton Park on Saturday in a nailbiting match with the potential victory for either side being enough to decide who stays in East League One North.

The visitors started the brightest and forged many attacks resulting in vital short corners.

From one of these they opened the scoring with a well taken finish by Jess Shepherdson, slamming home the rebound off a defender.

Saffron Walden applied more pressure from this point and Sudbury seemed to lack focus.

This allowed a stinging pass into the D to split the Sudbury defence and find a forward ready to tap in for an early equaliser.

In the second half the battle for possession was won by a composed and slick Walden as Sudbury’s passing game deserted them.

Keeper Lizzie Anderson was again player of the match for keeping Sudbury in the game with one-on-one stops and confident clearing around the goal.

Saffron Walden scored their second, but with plenty of time for Sudbury to come back into the game they continued to work hard to make something happen, creating a few chances.

Walden were always dangerous on the break and as Sudbury committed all forward for the last few minutes they took advantage and scored a third to seal victory and move to second in the league.
