Promotion achieved, Sudbury Rugby Club chairman Bob Waller’s thoughts turned to the future and how to build on the success of the players.
Sudbury’s 55-7 demolition of Beccles, in front of a large crowd at Whittome Field, clinched the London League 3NE title and promotion. “That’s phase one achieved,” said Waller.
“Phase two is promotion again, and phase three stability then. So it won’t be a sit-back summer.
“There is a lot of planning needed to make the club more attractive and make sure we can deliver to the players what is wanted to maintain the high standards.”
Promotion, he said, was “a major step forward. It’s been three years in the making, with a lot of hard work, commitment and effort from (director of rugby) Graham Richards, Dick Sumner and all the coaches, and from a lot of players. We’ve played over 40 players in the first team this year and it’s paid off.”
Waller hopes that promotion, and the brand of exciting rugby that Sudbury are playing, will make the club more attractive.
“I hope that Sudbury players, who are playing elsewhere, perhaps even at a better level, might want to come back to us.
“We want them back, and we want new players to come. We are an inclusive club. We need to encourage the youngsters. There is a huge potential, and we need to capitalise on it,” he said.
“We didn’t win ugly. I’ve always been one who has been prepared to win ugly, and there may have been the odd game that we have had to scrap in, but mainly we have played really nice rugby.
“Some of the stuff today was superb. Beccles were beaten after 20 minutes.
“Some of it was just magnificent. The passion, the intensity that Graham has brought to the team that does that,” he said.
A number of former players enjoyed the game on Saturday. “Even in the heyday of the national leagues some of the players would have been challenged to play rugby like that,” said Waller.
The club will be running twice-weekly O2 Touch rugby sessions through the summer, starting next month, and Waller expects the fun and fitness programme will give a lot of people a first look at the club, and hopefully bring some new members as the club gets ready for next season’s fresh challenges.
