Sudbury Rugby Club have the chance to put the pressure on the leading pair in London League Two North East when they take on bottom club Basildon at Whittome Field on Saturday (3pm), writes Ken Watkins.
With leaders Diss at second-placed Saffron Walden on Saturday, Sudbury, who lie third, can close the gap by beating winless Basildon.
Sudbury captain Justin Burton warned his team-mates to guard against complacency against a team that has lost all 12 games this season.
“They have nothing to lose,” he said, “so it’s up to us to be professional and make sure we get a result.
“The top two are playing each other, so one of them is likely to lose ground.
“We have to keep winning and put the pressure on them.”
Sudbury won 47-7 at Basildon in October, and will be looking to complete their second league double of the season.
Sudbury scored eight tries in their 44-6 victory at Romford & Gidea Park last weekend, completing their first double of the season, having won their home fixture 20-3 back in September.
“It wasn’t our best performance,” said Burton, “as we were a bit rusty after the Christmas break. But it’s another five points.”
