Newton Green schoolgirl starlets Alice Barlow and Ellie Aldous have caused a major upset by knocking out the holders of the Haskell Trophy.
The youngsters are into the semi-finals of the prestigious 36-hole knockout event after defeating last year’s winners, Sharon Luckman and Amanda Norman from Felixstowe Ferry.
Barlow, 14, and Aldous, who recently turned 15, won 2up in a home tie which finished in 40 mph winds.
The duo, who are pupils at senior schools in Great Cornard and Bury St Edmunds respectively, have handicaps of five and seven, against those of one and two by Suffolk players Luckman and Norman.
Luckman, who recently became Suffolk matchplay champion, went into battle with an ongoing heel injury, and with Norman the pair were 3dn after 19 holes.
The experienced pair pulled back the deficit for a short spell, eventually going 1up, but the Newton youngsters held their nerve to stage a fightback and pull off a famous victory.
The Haskell Trophy was founded in 1969 and is played off scratch.
Until this year Newton Green Golf Club has never entered the competition in its present format because of a lack of single handicap women golfers — now they are one match from the final.
Barlow and Aldous defeated Rookery Park in the first round, and have a third home tie in succession when they face Ipswich in the last four.
The Newton pair were recently named as non-travelling reserves for Suffolk in the forthcoming county team week at The Bedfordshire.
However, they have since been named as travelling reserves, with the expectation of definite selection for at least one game.
Aldous will make the trip, but school exam commitments have forced Barlow to withdraw.
n Tibby Mimpriss and Sheila Walter shared the glory of overall winners as Newton Green Golf Club held Carol Durston’s Simply Red themed Ladies’ Captain’s Day.
With a cut-out Mick Hucknell in-tow, 48 members competed in a nine-hole Texas Scramble and nine-hole Greensomes competition.
With a score of 41, the duo of Mimpriss and Walter took the title, closely followed by Di Cunningham and Claire Aldous with 36 points and Pam Guilbert and Thelma Ardley in third with 34 points.
Meanwhile, Jeaninne Stephens and Joyce Hollocks secured victory in the separate nine-hole stableford competition with a score of 14 points.
n The Newton Green Golf Club Mixed Open was held recently with 16 pairs taking part.
Topping the members’ scores were Leighann and Steven Wordley with 43pts, with Sarah and Chris Williams second with 41pts.
From the members and guests section, Glenys and Brian Grove came first with 39pts, with Jenny and David Downes second with 37pts.
The visitors’ section was won by Cretingham pair Sarah and Ivan Gotts (39pts on countback).
A total of £90 was raised in the £1 pot draw, the winner, Brian Grove, kindly donated his half of the pot to the men’s and ladies’ captain’s charities.
