Newton Green Golf Club are on the verge of retaining their Suffolk Hambro Cup crown after securing a narrow semi-final success over Hintlesham.
The semi-final win was recorded on the neutral course of Woodbridge where, in convincing style, Newton won the cup last year for the first time in more than 40 years, against Purdis Heath, Ipswich.
Without having appeared in any type of county team final for more than four decades, Newton has now recorded a hat-trick of men’s finals, having lost the county scratch Stenson team final three years ago, and now two Hambro handicap cup appearances in succession.
The semi-final Hambro victory against Hintlesham was a close affair, after Newton had given themselves a useful, eight-hole lead during the morning foursomes.
Both teams retained the same line-ups for the afternoon, and the Newton lead partnership of Russell Oakey and junior Harvey Watts came home two holes up.
However, in two other matches, Hintlesham were turning the tables in convincing manner, but another senior/junior partnership win from Greg Hills and Jed Seeley saw Newton home.
The final, which will take place on Sunday, August 30, will see them face Haverhill, who knocked Newton out of the Stenson Shield earlier in the season.
