Newton Green Golf Club duo Lily May Humphreys and Alice Barlow both enjoyed highly encouraging results in Portugal last week.
Recent Suffolk arrival Humphreys, aged only 14, finished second in the prestigious Telegraph BMW Juior Championships, with current Suffolk women’s and junior champion Barlow finishing in seventh.
Humphreys, one of the youngest competitors in the field, has enjoyed wins at both junior and adult level this year, and led the field on the first day on one under par.
She carded an impressive 71, the best round of any girl during the week, but scores of 76 and 75 eventually put her six over for the three-day event at the testing Quinta do Lago course on the Algarve.
It meant Humphreys just missed out on receiving the winning trophy from Paul Casey, as she was beaten by two shots by Berkhamstead’s 16-year-old Hannah Screen.
Meanwhile, Barlow, who has swept all before her in Suffolk golf this year and won the recent national junior champion of champions event, put up a battling performance in her first taste of golf on the high profile overseas scene.
Barlow opened with a 77, before sliding to an 82 on the second day and then recovering with a 79 on the final day.
