Ben Scully has taken over as head coach at Sudbury Rugby Club — with the promise of more exciting rugby at Whittome Field during the 2016-17 campaign.
The appointment of former Bury St Edmunds player Scully, 27, who coached Thetford to Norfolk Junior Cup success last season, was announced on Tuesday night when he had his first meeting with Sudbury’s players at the club.
Sudbury, after two successive promotions under Graham Richards, who stepped down at the end of last season, will be playing in London League Division One North next season, and Scully is determined to play his part in the club continuing to rise.
“This is a hell of an opportunity, and it’s a very exciting club to come to. I am very lucky to step in to take over at the level Graham has got them to,” he said.
“I like how he has the boys playing. That’s how I want us to play. I want the Sudbury brand to be exciting rugby.
“Sudbury are a very young team, but that is one of the most exciting things about the club.
“Their average age is 22, and to have got where they are at that age is fantastic.
“Graham’s a tough act to follow, but I hope I can keep building on what he has done, bringing in a few individual tweaks, and be part of the club continuing to rise.”
Club chairman Bob Waller added: “Ben is a young and very talented coach, and we are looking forward to working with him and continuing to build on the success of the past few years.
“The club will give Ben every support and resource possible to ensure that the club continues to move forward, introducing home-grown talent wherever possible.”
Scully said the aspirations of the club, and the quality of the players, had been the major factors influencing his decision to take the post, and he is determined to keep the conveyor belt of talent moving.
“The fact that almost all the boys are home-grown means there is a love for the shirt. I think it’s incredibly important that Sudbury is in their blood.”
Looking at the challenge of next season, Scully said: “I want to win as many games as possible.
