NEWTON Green’s hopes of reaching the last eight of the Suffolk Hambro Cup were dashed on the last hole at Waldringfield.

Despite unavoidable late call-offs from two of Newton’s leading hopes, Ben Mellon and Russell Oakey, they fought a tight toe-to-toe battle with the home team, with Newton two holes up after the morning matches.

In the afternoon, Waldringfield forced a slender lead, but as the final pairs went up the last hole, Newton had fought back and the tie stood all-square.

A win on the par three 18th would have seen a one-hole victory for either side, and half a play-off.

However, failing to make par by the Newton pair and a second shot chip to within a few inches of the hole for the hosts, meant the home side were able to sink a short par putt to pull off victory.
