Former Sudbury players were on show when Saracens Women took on Woodbridge Amazons at Whittome Field during Sunday’s open day.
Louise Rickard has played for Wales, Sonia Green captained the England Sevens and Heather Stammers has played for England Students.
The game was to honour Steve Savory, who has coached Sudbury Ladies for many years and is also forwards coach at Saracens, to recognise the hard work and dedication he has put in to further the profile of women’s rugby over the years.
Ellie Gatlin, Rebecca Bushell, April Brown and Jess Ryan, all former Sudbury players, helped Saracens to an easy win, ably led by England Ladies’ captain Maggie Alphonsi.
But credit must go to Woodbridge, who put up a spirited defence and played some attractive rugby against one of the top sides in England.
The open day marked the start of the season for Sudbury’s youth section and a large number of children from all age groups were Whittome Field to register.
It is not too late to join and all will be welcome to the training sessions, which take place over the next few Sunday mornings from 10am-12pm.
