Newton Green Golf Club’s men’s side will play in their first Suffolk Hambro Cup final since 1972 when they travel to Woodbridge a week Sunday.
Back then the county cup final victory saw them complete a run of three successes over 13 seasons.
They will play Ipswich on August 31, who beat Brett Vale, while Newton were defeating Waldringfield by six shots at Haverhill.
Having been beaten finalists in Suffolk’s scratch Stenson Shield competition last year, Newton now have a second chance to land a county title, this time in the Hambro format, which is played off handicaps.
Reaching successive finals underlines Newton’s emerging force in Suffolk golf, with their women having gained three county titles last season.
They had a tough battle against Waldringfield, whose slightly higher handicap players received 12 shots in both the morning and afternoon foursomes.
However, Newton achieved success by three holes both before and after lunch.
Already without first choices Simon Bearman and Jed Seeley because of other commitments, Newton faced another set-back when transport troubles led to a last-minute withdrawal by Lee Hebdtich, who eventually made it to the course, but it was too late to be included in the line-up, and he was replaced by Steve Wordley.
Club champion and Suffolk player Russell Oakey (handicap two) led with 14-year-old Harvey Watts (six), the latter having scored his first hole-in-one in the week leading up to the semi-final.
They proved a successful pairing, being 1up in the morning and three ahead in the afternoon against Darren Benham (nine) and Pete Adams (seven).
Anchor role pair Greg Hills (two) and Connor Talbot (five) also recorded doubles, being 2up in both rounds against Steve Creasey (six) and Mike Noble (eight).
RESULTS: Morning: Russell Oakey and Harvey Watts 1up to Darren Benham and Pete Adams, Ryan and Bob Talbot 1up to Kevin Calver and Mike Virley, Mark Duthie and Steve Wordley 1down to Lennie Rivers and Alan Pryke, Greg Hills and Connor Talbot 2up to Steve Creasey and Mike Noble.
Afternoon: Oakey and Watts 3up to Benham and Adams, Ryan and Bob Talbot all square with Calver and Virley, Duthie and Wordley 2down to Rivers and Pryke, Hills and Connon Talbot 2up to Creasey and Noble.
