Boxers left Starie eyed

FORMER professional super middleweight boxer David Starie came to Sudbury to give advice to the young up and coming fighters at Sudbury Amateur Boxing Club.

The former British and Commonwealth champion who twice fought for a world title, once going the distance with Joe Calzaghe, gave an inspirational talk and training tips to the budding young boxers during a regular evening training session last week.

Starie advised the youngsters on the importance of dedication, training, nutrition and respect before giving the boxers some hands on training in the ring.

The Sudbury boxers also listened to tales about Starie’s impressive boxing career and got to try on some of his treasured championship belts.

Neil Anderson, head coach at the club, thanked Starie for coming just days before the Sudbury club’s main event of the year, its black tie dinner show, being held at the Sudbury Sports Centre, on Saturday, November 12, starting at 6.30pm, where it is hoped more than ten local boys will be in action.

Tickets for the event are available on a first come, first serve basis on the night or by contacting chairman Brian Anderson on 01787 880767 or club secretary Charlie Lawson on 01787 311557.
