Billy Bird is ready to seize the biggest opportunity of his burgeoning professional career and catch the eye of major promoter Frank Warren.
The former Sudbury Boxing Club member is preparing to step out onto the biggest stage he has faced to date after finding himself added to the bill of a show of the world-renowned promoter at Bethnal Green’s York Hall, London, tomorrow night where he will face 28-year-old Mike Byles.
But despite conceding his slight surprise at his inclusion, the 22-year-old, who has a faultless 10-win light middle-weight professional record to date, is determined to put on a show and make the most of his latest opportunity to impress.
“Getting on to one of Frank Warren’s bills is amazing and a real honour,” he said.
“It will be a show of all of his hot prospects so it is a big opportunity for me.
“If I can get in the eyeline of Frank and impress then it could be the start of something really big for me.
“It could be that next step for me and so I am just getting my head down and doing my most to take the opportunity.
“All I really want to do is put on a performance and show what I am about. “I haven’t stopped smiling since I got the news and it has pushed me on even more.
“Maybe this chance has come a bit earlier than I would have expected but everything happens for a reason and I’m ready for the step up.
“I’m 22 now and I just want to take every chance that comes along with both hands.”
The opportunity came about courtesy of Bird’s trainer Graham Everett at Norwich-based Kickstop Gym.
And with talent such as Tyson Fury, Chris Eubank Jr and Billy Joe Saunders among Warren’s books, a knockout performance tomorrow could gift Bird with the real possibility of joining them.
“My trainer sorted everything out and I know he’s spoken to Frank about me so hopefully I can really get my name out there now,” he added. “To be signed by Frank would be amazing and I couldn’t really ask for anymore.
“He is the main guy in boxing in this country, he’s got that history behind him.
“He looks after some great talent and for me he is number one, so to have any chance of joining him would be truly great.”
