Ben Barker took points home in round six of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup double header at Belgium’s iconic Spa-Francorchamps.
With an extra race added to the weekend’s schedule to replace the cancelled event in Germany, the Clare-raised former West Suffolk College pupil was handed two outings on one of his favourite circuits.
The first race on Saturday saw Barker quick to make up a position on the opening lap, as he passed one car around the outside of La Source.
Barker was propelled up another place when polesitter Michael Ammermuller crashed out at Pouhon, before quickly latching onto the rear wing of Christian Engelhardt and finishing in sixth spot.
Spurred on by his performance, Barker went into the second race on Sunday morning confident of making up places again in the 33-strong field.
The British racer soon found himself homing in on a four car battle for places inside the top 10, and when the two cars at the front of the group made mistakes through Eau Rouge, Barker pounced to pass Carrera Cup Germany teammate Connor de Phillippi and three others to climb into seventh.
However once into seventh position, Barker found himself having to defend from de Phillippi over the second-half of the race, eventually slipped one place to finish in eighth.
“It was a pretty exciting race considering I was starting 14th,” Barker said. “I got an okay start and benefited from a couple of accidents ahead of me, but it was catching and passing four cars in one move that really got me buzzing!
“The tyres were the ones I had to use to set my best laps in qualifying, so they were well used even before the race.
“I had no pace and a lot of understeer, so it was a major task to keep Connor behind me. Fortunately, he kept the battle clean and we both made it to the finish.”
Barker returns to action in the Supercup when the competition visits Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza for round seven a week on Saturday.
Following two races over the weekend of September 5-6, the season concludes with a double header at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on October 24-25.
