Alan lands back-to-back crowns at Luffenham

The ever-consistent Alan Swindley completed a brilliant double in this year’s club championships at North Luffenham.

Swindly won Luffenham’s Open Championship, played over two rounds over two weekends, carding magnificent rounds of gross 81 and 80 to finish one shot ahead of Peter Barker (off 7) who scored 85 and an excellent 77. This really was a battle between the club’s two best golfers.

Dom Freckingham was third with an impressive 170, with rounds of 82 and 88 playing off 14.

Keith Bellamy led the way in the nett competition, scoring 136 (off 18) with nett scores of 66 and 70. Freckingham was in second with a nett 140, closely followed by Swindley on nett 145.

Swindley then cleaned up in the Seniors Championship with another excellent gross round of 81. Jim Ashworth, off 13, was runner-up with 84, beating Graham Ball into third on countback.

Graham Dexter won the seniors’ nett competition, which doubled up as the July Midweek Medal, with an excellent nett 66, earning him a two stroke cut in his handicap to 20.

Second was Graham Ball (off 17) with a nett 67 followed by Geoff Clyde (off 21) also on 67. Both players lost a shot on their handicaps.

In the July Sunday medal, Tom Little led division 1 with a round of 69 (off 12) beating Peter Barker on countback. Keith Bellamy was third with a nett 68 playing off 18.

An impressive net 67 put Dave Grieve on top in division 2, earning him a one shot reduction in his handicap to 21. He was closely followed by Ian Duncan with 68, with Ian Brocklehurst in third with 71 (off 20).

l North Lufffenham Gents have had two disappointing results in the past couple of weeks.

They went down 5-1 at Burghley Park against a strong Burghley C team, after winnig the previous clash 3½- 2½ at home.

On aggregate Burghley won 7½-4½ to retain the RAF trophy, The Bird.

Results: Ken Jones and Peter Kelleher lost 3&2, Charles Cade and Graham Ball lost 4&2, Dom Freckingham and Stan Smith lost3&2, Malcolm Hird and Dale Pettitt lost 2&1, John Everitt and Richard Young won 6&5, Tom Little and Don Lambert lost 5&4.

Luffenham then lost at home 3½-2½ to Rutland County C.
