It was a truly bumper weekend of achievements and results for Halstead Road Ruuners, headed up by their very own reigning World Duathlon Champion Maurice Young successfully beginning the defence of his title by winning the Monster Duathlon for his age category in Ely.

The 80-year-old ran 5km, followed by a 25km bike ride, finishing another 5km run.

Due to adverse weather conditions, many competitors failed to finish the course, but not Young, whose winning time was two hours, 30 minutes and 25 seconds.

Continuing with the veteran theme, marathon man Andy Wilmot travelled up to Nofolk to compete in the Poppyline 50 mile race.

This ultra test of endurance was no match for 70-year-old Wilmot, who completed the course in just over 15 hours.

Saturday saw the cross country season come to a close with Halstead taking 10 athletes to the prestigious National Cross Country Champrionship at the iconic Parliament Hill fields, Hampstead Heath, London.

With more than 5,000 athletes competing in a total of 10 races, the standards were really high. Halstead held their own though, and in truly quagmire conditions, were able to achieve some truly brilliant results.

In the five mile female race, competing in a field of 865, Rosie Atkins lead the ladies home, while Stuart Prestney once again proved his impressive form in a field of more than 2000 men, to lead the team home over the seven mile course.

RESULTS. Ladies. 570th Rosie Atkins 46mins 39secs; 608th Wendy Carter 47.44; 666th Hazel Buist 49.45. Mens: 745th Stuart Presney 52.01; 1066th Bradley Doe 55.28; 1258th Juan De Gea 57.39; 1338th Bob Langley 58.37; 1398th Nathan Roulson 59.25; 1792nd Alistair Godfrey 1hr 07mins 00secs; 1836th Andy Carter 1.08.30.
