AFC Ladies moved a step closer to retaining their Suffolk Women’s Cup crown after cruising to an emphatic 4-0 semi-final success against Bury Town Ladies.

After a strong start in which Sophie Jeffrey headed narrowly past the post in the third minute, AFC’s pressure finally told after 10 minutes as Jeffrey beat her marker on the wing before crossing for Charley Roach to fire home at the back post.

That pressure continued in the early stages as Natalie Golding tested the Bury goalkeeper with a free-kick from the edge of the area, as her effort was parried away.

Any nerves were settled slightly midway through the half as Sudbury doubled their lead.

Golding tried her luck from 35-yards and when her effort was parried, Jeffrey reacted quickest to head the ball over the goalkeeper and covering defender and into the empty net.

A third nearly followed before the interval but Phoebe Roach sent her shot narrowly past the post after good work to set her up by Roach.

The second half started much as the first had ended with Sudbury in the ascendency.

And they went agonisingly close to adding a third shortly after the restart as Sophie Pink’s 20-yard effort came crashing back off the post before being cleared to safety.

The result was put beyond doubt after 67 minutes as Lottie Churchman rose highest to head home a Golding corner.

Sudbury increased their lead further after 70 minutes when Emma Squirrell took on her defender and crossed for Jeffery to score the fourth.

AFC refused to rest on their laurels and continued to surge forward in search of further goals.

However, there was to be no further breakthrough as AFC sealed their place in the final where they will meet Ipswich Town, who beat Lowestoft 1-0 in the other semi-final.
