Sudbury Ladies’ I headed into the home clash with their Waltham Forest counterparts in the knowledge that they needed just two more wins to secure promotion.
However, after a dominant start from the visitors, they took the lead early on.But, Sudbury were not behind for too long as Chloe Hunnable equalised with a shot from the top of the D.
The same player put Sudbury in front just before the break after Tilly Arulampalam ran the full length of the pitch on the counter-attack.
No further goals were scored in the second half, meaning that a win next week at home against Welwyn Garden City will seal promotion.
n There was not such positive news for Sudbury Men’s I, who were beaten 3-1 by Shefford and Sandy.
Sudbury found themselves 2-0 behind early on, but a goal from Mayers brought them back into contention at the interval. The hosts scored again in the second half and, despite having a man sent off late on, they were able to hold on for the victory.
n Sudbury Men’s II ran out comfortable 4-1 victors from their trip to Lowestoft Railway.
Leigh Bevan opened the scoring following the award of a penalty flick, before Jay Armitage finished off a team move to make it 2-0.
Railway pulled a goal back after the restart and had a good chance to level the scoreline with a penalty flick, but Sudbury goalkeeper Dan McGuinness pulled off a save.
That lifted Sudbury, who made sure of the win in the closing stages as Bevan and Freddie Flowers both netted.
n There were celebrations for Sudbury Men’s IV, who clinched the Division 7NE title with a 6-1 win over Watton.
Angus Marlow scored two of Sudbury’s goals as they cruised to victory.
n As for Sudbury Ladies’ II, they were defeated 1-0 at home by Christchurch Ladies’ II.
The home side failed to make the most of numerous short corners and had two goals disallowed on what was a frustrating afternoon.
