Ipswich Town fan Russell Claydon says Mick McCarthy hasn’t lost the dressing room
It was the week when something finally went right for under fire Mick McCarthy.
You may be spluttering out your cornflakes now, wondering what I’m on about when we’ve all been trying to recover from football’s equivalent of a proverbial kick in the goolies. But since that sickening injury-time equaliser at the City Ground there was a clink of light shining through at Playford Road.
Unfortunately the potential answer to our recent woes currently rests on the shoulders of a teenager who was not even born by time Mick was going into his second job.
But while ‘Edward Bishop’ may have caught a few out on the teamsheet for the under-21s’ home game with Crystal Palace on Tuesday, it was music to the ears of most of us.
A full 90 minutes for ‘Teddy’, on his first game since the play-offs, shows the cavalry is on its way, in regards to a central creative midfield spark.
McCarthy will be wise enough not to rush him back, despite cries for his inclusion, but his return to action will have also given the dressing room a much-needed boost.
For those who think Mick has already lost them, I think you’re well wide of the mark.
The selection against Forest, seeing messrs McGoldrick, Murphy and Sears start together for the first time, was very encouraging, while I hear the display was promising.
Dean Gerken seems to have been made the scapegoat, but I’m not having that. If Berra wanted to head it he had to put his name on it. And it was down to Gerks we were level at half-time.
Tomorrow gives us another chance to right the wrongs, but it’s now at the stage where any kind of performance is tolerable, as long as we come out with those three points.
My colleague Ron Raisey can be a patient sort with sports viewing, being a cricket umpire, but even he was sent to sleep by Cardiff’s bore draw with Bristol City.
The Bluebirds, the club I used to write for, didn’t even manage a shot on target on Monday — and with Kenwyne Jones ruled out again, long may that continue tomorrow!
