Ipswich Town fan Russell Claydon says: Lift off can happen by raising the roof

It was a conversation that, thankfully, had become inevitable.

‘We’re miles away from being ready to go up,’ said a female Cobbold Stand season ticket holder I struck up a chance chat with flying back from Barbados (apologies to those trying to sleep!).

With some turbulence negotiated, with wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham (2-1) leaving us two points off the summit, maybe we now do have to consider being ready to take-off to the Premier League.

I did agree we would be in a difficult position, should it happen. But Burnley aren’t disgracing themselves, are they?

We don’t have many stars, but — as her husband pointed out — a team is only the sum of its parts.

Reshaping that with higher-paid names would be risky, while relying on it would also be a gamble.

But the displays against a very good Southampton side, as well as our current league’s top teams, suggest that maybe we could hold our own up there.

For now though, it is very much about getting us airborne, and two bottom-half sides at home over the next week, with Reading visiting Saturday (3pm), followed by Birmingham City on Tuesday (7.45pm), gives us a great chance to put a new winning run together. And that is surely a must to realise a promotion dream.

I was covering the supporters’ club’s ITFC On The Road event at Bury Town hours after I touched down, and Cole Skuse revealed Mick McCarthy has told the players they need 91-92 points for the top two and around 75 for the play-offs.

On the designated fans’ day on Saturday, if you want the players to play their part, it’s time to play yours.

Portman Road isn’t presently lauded for atmosphere, but now is certainly the time to raise the roof!

* A day of supporters events on Saturday kicks-off at The Dove Street Inn in St Helens Street from 12pm with special guests from the club and a live BBC Radio Suffolk broadcast.
