Ipswich Town fan Russell Claydon says ‘Important box ticked with Sears’
First there was nothing, and now seemingly everything!
If I was a press officer at Portman Road, I would probably be heading for the nearest dark room (not Marcus’ box though!) for a well-earned lie down.
There was more activity in and out of Portman Road on Tuesday than any deadline day I can remember.
Billy Sharp seems to be the one who got away, though I would love to see Terry Connor get to work with a player of his calibre, and hope a deal isn’t dead.
But pace was what the Southampton game alone showed we sorely need up front, and in Freddie Sears we have ticked that box.
Two-and-a-half years seemed a long contract, but after 14 goals in League One in a struggling Colchester side, it looks like he could be an important addition.
The West Ham reject has a point to prove, and certainly made a great impact at Millwall on Saturday with a deft lay-on to Jonny Parr for the third in the important 3-1 win. Hands up if you would have taken that over a Saints cup win? Yep, me too.
Paddy Kenny being brought in from Bolton as cover for ‘the Bart man’ with Dean Gerken (hip) sidelined is great for his experience and ability, but I just hope he isn’t a bad influence on a very tight-knit affable dressing room.
Kevin Bru signing a new deal was certainly great news this week, while Gerken’s was a bit of a surprise.
Again, I’m having to write this before Wednesday’s game, at Brighton, but it seems whatever happens, especially after Bournemouth’s Tuesday slip-up we’re in a position we would never have dreamt of going into this enforced break.
Never mind the players, maybe some of us fans could do with a lie down come Saturday!
