Ipswich Town column: Don’t stop believing, this could be Town’s year!

For a club that hasn’t had much to celebrate in 14 Championship seasons, Tuesday night was a real moment to be proud to be associated with our county’s sole professional side.

Five straight away wins is some achievement, and the fact that it hadn’t been done since Sir Bobby Robson’s stars of 1976, really puts it into context.

The irony was it came within days of the ‘disgruntled with Mick brigade’ attempting to hijack a pleasing and important come-from-behind victory over QPR by suggesting Mick McCarthy is not the man to lead us forward.

I’ve heard some pretty terrible jokes over Christmas, but that is the one that was the most ‘crackers’.

As my mate Rich from Bury said on the airwaves post-match Tuesday: ‘we’re not bad for a negative hoof-ball team, are we?’

We’ll begin 2016 just four points off third place now, with a bit of daylight opening up between us and seventh (also four), and going into Saturday at fifth place Burnley (3pm) we are just a point behind them.

Just to stop Rich’s head getting any bigger though, didn’t some columnist say ‘don’t panic’ the other week?...

Ok, so the QPR game wasn’t great, but the result was what was important and that character to come from behind says a lot about this team.

I’ve even seen a straight male Town fan suggest they’d be tempted to hit on our last-minute hero: Luke Chambers.

‘Don’t stop believing’ needs to be turned up loud at Portman Road, if brain washing is what is needed.

After a wobble, the boys are certainly back in Town.

Happy New Year.
