Halstead Town 1

Saffron Walden Town 2

Halstead took the opportunity to give some of their fringe players an outing, with Tom Glassington and Gary McIlwaire making their debuts.

Joe Illet scored his first goal for the Humbugs, but striker Sam Cripps was sent off in the second half on Tuesday night following two yellow cards.

Halstead came close early on when a shot from Tom Cook was parried, and Cook’s second effort cleared off the line.

Shortly after, a long ball out from defence saw Walden striker Graeme Turner control well, beat the defence and slot home.

Keeper Joe Fowler made a splendid save at the start of the second half to deny the visitors, and Halstead swiftly countered.

They forced a corner, Cripps heading the ball back across the goal for Illet to power a header home.

Cripps, Cook and Chris Bryan all went close before another break by the visitors saw Turner draw a fine save from Fowler.

But the ball fell kindly for former Halstead and Long Melford player Dan Grindrod, who grabbed the winner.

n On Saturday, Halstead drew 2-2 in a First Division fixture at league high-fliers Framlingham Town.

The Castlemen were reduced to ten men after an hour, but Halstead were unable to hang on for a victory, conceding an equaliser in injury time.

An even, but goalless, first half saw home striker Danny Smith going close to breaking the deadlock.

On the hour, James Murray was brought down by Johnson on the edge of the box, the defender getting a straight red card.

Halstead went ahead when Lewis Cunliffe’s cross was turned into his own net by Mayhew.

But Framlingham hit back with a disputed penalty, five minutes from time, Poacher’s power beating Fowler’s dive.

Soon after, Jules Simon-Parsons held off defenders to restore Halstead’s lead, but deep into stoppage time Fowler somehow failed to gather a shot from Goddard, and two points were dropped.
