Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club’s father and son partnership of Ian and Matt Thompson retained the Edinburgh Cup playing on the Gainsborough Course.

The trophy is an annual foursomes stableford competition for parent and child pairs playing off half-combined handicaps.

Club vice-captain Ian Thompson said he was delighted with the win, playing with his son Matt, and he stressed the importance of junior competitions at Stoke-by-Nayland.

Full results: 1 Ian and Matt Thompson 36 points; 2 Justin and Max Toombs 30; 3 Bev and Nathan Thompson 27; 4 David and Sam Nixon 24.

n Pete Harris, playing in the Stoke by Nayland October Medal on the Gainsborough course was not having a good day until he birdied the 17th hole.

He then stood on the tee of the 18th, a difficult par three across water, and took his four iron as the hole was playing a full 200 yards.

To his delight he watched the ball land on the green and roll into the hole. It was the third hole in one for the eight-handicapper.
