Suffolk FA Under-18s — who included five Haverhill Rovers youngsters — got their East Anglian Counties Championship campaign off to a flying start with a 5-2 victory over Cambridgeshire FA.

Andy Reynolds’ side were in control throughout the game, and if they had been more clinical in front of goal could have won by a greater margin at Histon FC on Thursday evening.

Skipper Stefano Mallardo (AFC Sudbury) headed Suffolk in front, but Regan Brown equalised only for Haverhill’s Tyrone Alleyne to restore the visitors’ lead, all inside the opening 17 minutes.

James Axcell, another AFC Sudbury player, fired Suffolk further ahead, but Charlie Woolf reduced the deficit just before the break.

Rovers’ promising full-back Will Gardner, who went on trial with League Two side Barnet earlier this season, hooked home five minutes into the second period and George Mrozek made it five in the 82nd minute.
