Hadleigh end dismal spell with a victory
THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Hadleigh United 1
Kirkley & Pakefield 0
An injury hit Hadleigh United side ended a dismal run of one point from five games with a splendid win against highly-placed opposition at the Millfield on Saturday.
After a quiet start, the game came to life after 37 minutes with a vital goal. A rebound from a Kirkley and Pakefield defender fell kindly for Danny Thrower to break clear and score.
In the second-half, Hadleigh defended soundly, with keeper Ben Nower twice making superb saves at the expense of corners.
However, there was drama in the 63rd minute when Ross King was brought down in the area by Liam Jennings and the resultant spot kick was blazed wide of Nower’s right post by Ross Gilfedder.
Hadleigh made the most of this good fortune, with Thrower and Dan Knight both bringing the best out of visiting keeper, Lois Tibbles in the closing stages.
United will look to make it back-to-back wins when they host Fakenham Town on Saturday (3pm), but have been dealt a blow with news that striker David Lorimer could miss the rest of the season with a calf injury.
n Elsewhere in the Premier Division, 10 man Long Melford twice came from behind to earn a point in a 3-3 draw against Thetford Town at the weekend.
Indecision from the Melford defence led to Olly Standley opening the scoring for the hosts on six minutes, before Jamie Clark levelled for Melford 10 minutes later.
Scott Yearling put the Villagers in front after 27 minutes, but two minutes later another defensive blunder from Melford enabled Robbie Priddle to equalise.
Anthony Waugh was then shown a second yellow card to leave the visitors with 10 men and Shaun Hunsdon put the hosts back in front.
The 10 men of Melford battled back though with Jamie Griffiths securing a share of the spoils to end their losing run ahead of a trip to Godmanchester Rovers tomorrow (3pm).
n AFC Sudbury Reserves and Cornard United head into their Suffolk Senior Cup quarter-final clash on Saturday (3pm) in good form after recording wins away at Diss Town and Team Bury respectively at the weekend.
