Golfers celebrate St Patrick’s Day in style

There were 136 golfers spread across 34 teams out on Stoke-by-Nayland’s Gainsborough Course on Saturday for the St Patrick’s Day Competition.

Varied scoring was used, with the three scores to count format, but the winning total of 127 came from the team of Damien Slater, Bob Tokley, Richard Allen and Dick Chalmers.

The half-way hut was busy supplying the players with traditional Guinness and Magners to spur them on.

nThursday’s Stableford competition began on a beautiful spring morning when 30 ladies teeing off on the first hole of the Constable Course.

The sun was in evidence all the way round, however, the strengthening wind did spoil things somewhat, not only with its chill but also shortening shots when hit direct into it as well as a ball being sent sideways when caught in a crosswind.

The overall winner, and winner of the silver section, was Lesley Garnett with 33 points, from Ann Thomas second with 32 points and Anne Hemmings was third with 30 points.

The winner of the bronze section was Kate Fitzgerald with 22 points on count-back, with Edel Rew second with 22 points on count-back and third was Trisch Jackson with 22 points.
