Former Sudbury prop to join Newcastle Falcons next season
Former Sudbury Rugby Club prop Sam Lockwood will join Aviva Premiership side Newcastle Falcons at the end of the season.
The former England Students international has spent the last three seasons playing for Jersey in the Greene King IPA Championship and is set to make the step up to rugby union’s top flight later this year.
Speaking to the Newcastle Falcons official website, Lockwood said: “The opportunity to play in the top flight is definitely the main driver for me.
“It all came through very quickly, and I am really looking forward to being at the Falcons and living in the area.”
Lockwood began his career at Sudbury, where he represented the club from the Under-15s right up to the first team, and has also featured for the Eastern Counties Under-20s and the Suffolk county side.
The 27-year-old, who went to Thomas Gainsborough School while he lived in Suffolk, has played for Sheffield Tigers and Leeds Carnegie before he joined Jersey in 2014.
Lockwood added: “I have been playing down at Jersey for the last three years. I went to university at Leeds Met, did my England Students through there and got an opportunity to play at Leeds Carnegie, as they were called at the time.
“I was there for three and a half seasons, went on loan to Jersey and thought I would be better getting some playing time over there.
“I ended up staying with Jersey for three seasons. It has been a good time down there and I enjoyed it - very wet in the winter and hot in the summer. It was a nice place to play but I am looking forward to Newcastle now, and the new challenge that awaits me.”
Jersey head coach Harvey Biljon added: “Sam has developed into a stand-out player in the Championship and it’s not surprising that his performances have attracted the attention of a Premiership club.
“He’s made a fantastic contribution during his time in Jersey and we wish him all the best for the future.”
